EYFS

General

Our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) children join the Year 1 children in Beech class. A job share of two teachers and three support staff members staffs Beech class. All members of staff are responsible for your children when they are in school. We work closely together to ensure all children are happy, safe and secure and plan activities, which allow consistency and continuity across all ages and abilities.

Curriculum

The EYFS Framework explains how and what your child will be learning to support their healthy development.

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.

Three areas are particularly important for building a foundation for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, forming relationships and thriving.

The prime areas:

  • communication and language
  • physical development
  • personal, social and emotional development

The above prime areas are strengthened and applied through the four specific areas

The specific areas:

  • literacy
  • mathematics
  • understanding the world
  • expressive arts and design

The areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. The professionals teaching and supporting your child will make sure that the activities are suited to your child’s unique needs with a flexible curriculum.

Assessment

All children in EYFS will complete the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). This is a short assessment completed by the class teachers during the first 6 weeks of school.

In the final term, the EYFS Profile is completed for each child. The Profile provides parents and carers, practitioners and teachers with a well-rounded picture of a child’s knowledge, understanding and abilities, their attainment against expected levels, and their readiness for year 1. The teachers will conclude if the child has met the expected levels of development, or if they are not yet reaching expected levels (‘emerging’).

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Art and Design

Tests and Assessments

Pupils are tested formally twice in Key Stage 1. In Year 1, the children complete a Phonic screening check and in Year 2 the children complete their end of key stage tests. These are completed in a low-key manner and children enjoy working individually and in small groups alongside their class teacher.

Year 1 Phonics screening check

The check will take place in June. Your child will read 40 words aloud to the class teacher. The words are all decodable using phonic knowledge. The teachers will share the results of the check with parents and whether additional support is needed for your child in class. If your child does not reach the expected standard, they will retake the screening check in the autumn term of year 2.

Key Stage 1

The Key Stage 1 tests cover:
  • Reading
  • Maths (arithmetic and reasoning)
  • Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) optional
Writing assessments are based on unaided pieces of work from the academic year. Year 2 children complete the tests during May and these form a part of their overall end of year and end of key stage assessment. The class teachers will also use the class work and assessments made throughout the academic year to support their overall teacher judgements to assess if your child is working at age related expectations (ARE). The outcomes are shared in the end of year school report. More information about Key Stage 1 – www.gov.uk/national-curriculum/key-stage-1-and-2
